Important limitations

Edit a testimonial for clarity without changing its meaning

Last materially reviewed 2026-09-24

Quick answerKeep the original, preserve context and check the final excerpt against what the contributor actually said.
Likely to work well when

✓ Small teams with repeated customer-story requests

✓ Readers comparing concrete collection and review requirements

✓ Businesses needing an understandable publication inventory

Important limitations

— Fake reviews or manufactured endorsements

— Regulated advice or legal-compliance certification

— Generic CRM, course delivery or agency project management

What to know

Define the reason for the edit

Removing a long pause, improving caption accuracy or shortening a repeated sentence can serve a reader. Turning a qualified statement into an unconditional claim does something different. Write down the intended change before editing so a reviewer can distinguish readability work from a new endorsement. Do not generate a customer experience that was never supplied.

What to know

Compare complete passages

Read or watch the material around the selected excerpt. A sentence can reverse its meaning when separated from a limitation or a question. Preserve material context even when it makes a quote less promotional. The FTC’s linked guidance is relevant to truthful testimonials; it is not a certification of your specific content or a guarantee that an edit is lawful.

What to know

Keep versions identifiable

Store the original and public version under a shared identifier, with a clear review record. A filename such as final-new-final does not tell a colleague what changed or which version is on the website. Where the edit requires renewed approval, obtain it before publication. Do not overwrite the original to hide the difference or rely on someone remembering the conversation.

What to know

Check the destination too

A faithful quotation can still mislead when placed under an unrelated promise or beside a result the contributor did not achieve. Review the surrounding headline, attribution, captions and call to action together. Ask what a reasonable reader would understand from the whole module. If the context creates a claim the source cannot support, change the presentation or do not publish that combination.

What to know

An original decision example

Illustrative edit: “The setup helped after our team completed training” must not become “The setup helped immediately” through trimming. Compare the excerpt with the full sentence and the surrounding account. A shorter statement is useful only if its meaning survives; concision is not permission to change the described experience.

Where the safety evidence stops

This guide draws on FTC consumer reviews and testimonials rule questions, Boast submission instructions guidance. Merchant-controlled records describe the provider’s own capabilities, terms or standards; they do not independently validate those claims. Other cited records provide additional context. A different publisher or a research, regulatory or certification label does not by itself establish independence, relevance or product validation.

Verify any current price, plan limit, label direction, compatibility rule, or commercial term that would materially change the decision. The dated source ledger shows the underlying records so this conclusion can be checked and updated.
